Hey folks,
Time for another monthly Roundup!
Wizardry! and DURF Sale
Early in this month, I published a supplement for DURF, called Wizardry! It changes up the magic system and adds a lot of new spells for players and NPCs to use. I had a lot of fun working on it and am really grateful for Marcia B. who helped out with editing :)
I’m currently having a sale on all my DURF products which includes my two adventures and this zine, so grab them now if you haven’t yet :)
The Electrum Archive
I’ve spent a good bit of my time this month on rewriting parts of the first The Electrum Archive issue and drawing a massive illustrated map of Orn to go with it.
Free CC-BY Art Library
I released a bunch of illustrations under CC-BY this month. I’m cultivating a library of RPG illustrations that are free to use by everyone. If you want to support this effort consider supporting me on Patreon.
Thanks to my patrons, I have ability to make time to draw more illustrations for the library. I’m currently working on a series of illustrations covering the classic fantasy classes, a theme voted on by my patrons :)
Kill Jester Illustration
I made a promo illustration for Kill Jester :) They have recently released the digital versions of Ava’s Errant which fucking slaps so I highly recommend checking that out if you need a rules-light OSR-style system that is chock full of useful procedures.
Talking about procedures…
Some good blog posts this month
Here are some of the blog posts that I enjoyed reading this month:
Gus L wrote a great post defining Proceduralism. This is a great place to start if you want to understand what this “procedures vs. mechanics” fuss is all about. https://alldeadgenerations.blogspot.com/2022/06/a-manifesto-for-proceduralism.html
Ava Islam adds to the ongoing discussion about calendars and time-keeping by proposing how upcoming events (and cycles like day/night, weather or seasons) can be used to pull adventurers to certain opportunities and adventure locations. https://permacrandam.blogspot.com/2022/06/adventure-forecasts.html
Nick LS Whelan talks about the benefits of preparing tools that can react to players’ actions instead of preparing specific scenarios. https://www.paperspencils.com/prep-tools-not-adventures/
Emmy wrote a series of posts with some really interesting procedures inspired by the original Traveller RPG. https://www.hypertextfish.org/tagged/sojourner
Odds and Ends
Skyrealms has been funded! The Kickstarter is still going for 3 days, so back it while you still can!
Marcia B. put together a massive list of all the blog posts that were essential for the development of the theory of the OSR play style: https://chiquitafajita.blogspot.com/p/keystone-readings.html
My friend and fellow Good Sleep Collective member Jean Verne has released Follow the Convoy, a really cool free pamphlet containing procedures to create and run escort-based scenarios. He’s currently hosting a game jam for folks to make their own scenarios for it!
In my spare time, I’ve gone back to my roots as a video game designer. It started with messing around in the Morrowind Construction Kit, but now I’m messing around with a small system of my own inspired by the things I found while modding Morrowind. It has been really nice to 3D model and write code again without the pressure of it being for a job.
Besides having started another playthrough of Morrowind, I have also played Dread Delusion quite a bit. The game, which was brought to my attention by Ava, just came out in early access but it already perfectly fits into the type of games I enjoy. I’m curious to see how it develops over time.
That’s it for June :) Stay safe and I’ll talk to you again next month!
